Brooks Conrad’s tie-breaking single helps Atlanta Braves beat St. Louis Cardinals 6-5: MLB Update
Atlanta Braves's pinch hitter, Brooks Conrad, hit a crucial single in the ninth inning as the Braves defeated the St. Louis Cardinals 6-5 at the Turner Field in Atlanta on May 1.
Conrad expressed his excitement as, “It's the best feeling. Anytime you can get a base hit like that, it feels really good. Walk-off hits like that are few.”
The Cardinals opened their scoring account in the first inning when Matt Holliday took a two-run double. Albert Pujols and Lance Berkman also gave the run-scoring singles to the Cardinals.
Berkman went 2-for-4 and took the lead 3-0 for his team. Both the teams remained scoreless from second to fourth inning.
Pujols drove a single towards the centre field position in the fifth inning and led off the Cardinals to 4-0. But the Braves lessened their trail when Alex Gonzalez struck a two run homer
during fifth inning. Gonzalez then moved to second base on the sacrifice fly of Joe Mather and the Braves reached 4-3.
In the sixth inning, the Cardinals' third baseman David Freese suffered an injury in his right hand when Scott Linebrink pitched a fastball and Freese was unable to work it straight down
the ground. It was the miserable moment for the Cardinals. Later on, X-rays revealed that the bone was broken and he will not play the game for a long span.
Freese said of his injury, “It's a bone on top of another bone type of deal. I'll see what they say. Maybe I'll need surgery just to speed up the process.”
Dan Uggla scored a single run on the error of Pujols and tied the score 4-4. After that, Martin Prado took a single on the drive of Mather against Jason Motte and gave the Braves a lead of
5-4. Holliday hit a second double and posted a run on the flyball of Yadier Molina to again tie the score at 5-5.
Conrad took a single towards the centre field area on the hit of Alex Gonzalez and led off the Braves in the ninth inning with 6-5. Conrad had also a notable season during last year as he
hit two grand slams including three homers and 12 runs.
The Braves' starter, Derek Lowe, was little bit expensive as he allowed four runs on six hits including four earned runs and five strike-outs in five inning pitches.
