Brooks Koepka makes history at Fred Olsen Challenge de España – Golf news
Brooks Koepka fired a five-under par 66, in the final round of the Fred Olsen Challenge de España, to secure the third Challenge Tour victory of his career, on Sunday, June 2, 2013.
“It was tough out there today,” said Koepka. “I gave away a couple of shots early and I was coming down but then holed the putts I needed to. It feels great to win again. It's been a great week, to play at the top of the mountains here in such beautiful surroundings, the place is unbelievable. It feels great to break the record for the biggest win on the Challenge Tour. That’s a pretty cool record to have.”
This was surely a great news for all his fans. However, there was something some else that made the headlines on Sunday, as he secured his victory with a gigantic 10-stroke margin, which itself is a record on the European Challenge Tour.
The 23-year-old American showed complete dominance at Tecina Golf in the Canary Islands, as no one in the field managed to come close to him throughout the week.
He started his campaign with a seven-under par 64 on day one, followed by a 66 on Friday, to post a 12-under par halfway score.
After recording another 64 on day three, he went four ahead of his nearest rival Edouard Dubois. The final round also witnessed him showing his class on the course, as he recorded five birdies against a lone bogey, on the front nine, to reach the turn in four-under.
On the back nine of the course, he added another two shots while conceding just a single bogey, to secure a 10-stroke victory over Luis Cleverie, who also carded a five-under par score on day four.
Koepka pocked €25,600 as prize money, which also allowed him to extend his lead on top of the Challenge Tour Rankings.
Talking to the European Tour’s official website, he said that the playing conditions were a bit difficult. That is the reason why most of the players in the field did not manage to post low scores in the final round.
