Brooks Laich back with Washington Capitals, signs a 6-year $27 million contract –NHL Updates
Washington Capitals was successful in retaining its valuable centre player, Brooks Laich, as the 28-year-old re-signed to a six-year, $27 million contract on Tuesday, announced by the team management.
Capitals quick action kept one of the most wanted centre players in the league from becoming a free agent on July 1, on Friday.
In other ways, Laich never really had the intention of leaving Washington and Laich had agreed in words that they would not need to be searching for his replacement any time soon.
"There was never a serious consideration to go anywhere else", said Laich about the deal.
Originally a Canadian native from Wawota, Saskatoon, Laich was drafted by Ottawa Senators in the 2011 National Hockey League (NHL) Entry Draft as the 193rd overall pick during round-six.
He was barely able to spend a single season with Ottawa when a trade between Senators and Washington took place.
Laich has spent seven seasons with Capitals and has no intentions of leaving the team any time in the near future.
Last season, Laich registered 48 points, 16 goals and 32 assists, in all 82 games that he played.
It might not have been one of his best seasons, but he remains consistent in his performance. Laich was known to have been inducted into Washington when the franchise was at its lowest, but now has made it to the playoffs for four seasons straight, as one
of the East’s leading teams.
It is not about a single component which leads to winning championships, according to Laich, it is a team effort.
"I think this year there's got to be a lot more accountability amongst our players to each other, and to the coaches", Laich said. "It's up to every single player -- doesn't matter how much you make, or how long you're been here or what your name is -- to
practice as hard as they can, to practice as a team, to work as a team".
Laich moved ahead of his $6.1 million, three-year contract, into a much better position and will be a vital player for Washington in future seasons and playoffs.
