Question:

Broom or dust mop?

For a beautiful new ceramic tile floor, which is better? Really the question is . . . why use a dust mop? My entire life I've used brooms, but we now live in an area with an incredible dust problem. Would using a dust mop be beneficial? And, if so, does it get up the same stuff a broom does? What's the difference?

Thanks!

  1. Keep using your broom if that is what you prefer but make sure that you do it on a daily basis at least.

You can also try damp mopping to help reduce any residue left after you sweep.

I presume that you mean by a dust mop, one that is impregnated with some sort of stuff to attact dust. Usually a mop such as this is used on polished timber floors as it  usually contains a type of oil to keep the timber in good condition and that may make your tiles sort of greasy.

Perhaps go see a good cleaning supply store and see what they have to say - but personally I would just either broom it or vaccum each day and do a wet mop each day - tiles do dry quickly anyway

  3. dust mop is the way to go, i work in a hospital and we use dust mops. Brooms are for stairways and sidewalks

  4. this will help u

  5. I work in a school as a cleaner and we use dust mops because that pick up more dust and find particles then a broom can. We have terrazzo floors that are pretty much like ceramic. We also use a mop treatment spray so that it picks up even better.

  6. I prefer the dustmop for everyday (or every few days) cleaning up.  I always use a broom before wet mopping though.

  7. I own a residential/commercial cleaning service, so I know exactly what you are talking about.

In my experience, brooms always leave dust behind.  A broom is excellent for sweeping up things that you can see, but dust is hard to remove strictly with a broom.

to answer your question, I always sweep floors with a broom first, then use a dust mop/broom.  Kind of time consuming if there is a lot of floor space, but worth it.   A good product that helps with dust on floors is Swiffer dry (the dry white cloths).  When I first started using it, I was amazed at what the broom left behind.

Hope this helps & good luck!
