Brose Baskets use a big second quarter to down Unicaja 90-79 - Euroleague Basketball Recap
The last time Brose Baskets and Unicaja met in the Turkish Airlines Euroleague 2011, the later one finished on top.
However just few hours ago, Unicaja successfully avenged their defeat by downing the same opposition 90-79 to make it even, and more importantly improve their chances of reaching the top 16.
A 20-2 spurt reeled off by Brose midway through the second quarter got Brose ahead by 17 points 42-25 and proved decisive in the end, as despite making a comeback, Unicaja never completely managed to slash the lead.
Unicaja’s coach, Chus Mateo was extremely disappointed with his team’s performance and boldly accepted they were completely outplayed by the opponents. He added
"It was one of our worst games this season. There are no excuses. Brose Baskets played better than us and their defense simply shut us down. We never managed to compete at their level. We must make bigger efforts in defense we
were not solid enough. It's a shame because we wanted to secure our Top 16 spot, but we'll have to keep on working for that”
Earl Rowland and Joel Freeland were impressive for Unicaja and pounded 17 points each while Gerald Fitch added 15.
All the power players from Brose fired.
Julius Jenkins was the star performer and marshalled the winning team with game high 23 points including 3 for 6 from the three-point range and 4 for 4 from the free throw line. Marcus Slaughter accumulated 14 points and pulled
down 8 rebounds whereas Anton Gavel scored 12. Casey Jacobsen and Anthony Tucker also played their part well and chipped in with 11 points each.
The game started at a rapid pace with both teams displaying excellent offensive abilities. The scores got levelled on many instances and lead kept on shifting throughout. Both teams were neck to neck at 22 all with a minute remaining,
when a free throw by Berni Rodriguez made it 23-22. However a jam by Julius in the dying seconds ensured Brose entered the second frame ahead by 24-23.
The first six minutes of second frame were all about Brose. They bolted a crucial 20-2 burst, capped by Karsten Tada to go ahead by 42-25. Unicaja were up to the task and got themselves back in the game by replying with a 15-4
spurt to bring the lead significantly down, 46-40, in favour of Brose.
Unicaja fought well in the third frame, however Brose were attacking at full throttle and managed to maintain a double digit lead for most of the time in the quarter. The deciding quarter was the same as Unicaja failed to get any
close to Brose and in the end lost the game by 11 points.
