Broughton bids farewell to Liverpool, Toure asks City’s players to work harder, McLeish talks about luck
Martin Broughton, Liverpool’s chief executive is set to part ways with the club after a short stint at the Merseyside giants. Martin was brought in a few months ago to oversee the sale of the club to NESV, after the controversial takeover
at Liverpool had been completed; Martin’s departure was on the cards.
He confirmed the reports which suggested his departure from the club as he stated, "The game (against West Ham) is my last home fixture as chairman of Liverpool Football Club. It was always my stated intention to stand down once the sale
was completed and I am happy that the club is now in good hands. This has been one of the most memorable experiences of my working life and I would like to wish Liverpool and its supporters every success for the future. The last seven months have been a pleasure
and a privilege for me to serve this fantastic sporting institution.”
He added, "Everybody associated with the club can now look forward to an exciting future with the right owners and the club on a secure financial footing. Liverpool FC will always hold a special place in my heart as a result of the relationships
I have forged over these past months." Liverpool won their last league match against West Ham United at the Anfield stadium on Saturday night by three goals to nil.
Alternatively, Manchester City’s defender, Kolo Toure has come out and suggested that some of his team mates are not justifying their high wage packages as they are not working hard enough. City who spent big in the summer to gain title
challenging credentials have fallen short of the mark thus far and as they travel to Fulham on Sunday, they face yet another stern test in the English Premier League.
Toure said, "You need to be honest, even if you hurt people, and there are some players here, I am not scared to say, who are not working hard enough for the team. Some don't do enough in training but still expect to play. We all get big
wages at City but some need to work harder. You cannot have a place in the team - even if you are an international - if you don't show what you can do in training. As players, we have the best job in the world and if the manager said: 'You haven't worked hard
enough, you will only get half your wages this week' it would make players fight harder.”
The Ivory Coast defender concluded by stating, "I'm a professional footballer and, to me, playing regularly is the most important thing. Money is secondary." In other news, Birmingham City scrapped a lucky win against Chelsea after the
Blues missed a host of chances to equalize during the match. The eventual one nil win was accompanied by Alex McLeish’s remarks. He said, "We got a bit of luck but I would say that in recent weeks we have deserved to win games which never went our way. We
have had plenty of bad luck this season so far. Maybe we got a bit of luck today."
Birmingham City who went into the weekend with their feet firmly entrenched in the bottom three teams of the English Premier League climbed out of the relegation zone and into the 12th place spot in the league’s
standings after their win over Chelsea. Alex McLeish added to his comments as he said, "There is paranoia when you are in the bottom three and so much fickleness in the game. It is November, not the end of the season, but you just have to accept all the things
that are said and get on with it."
