Question:

Brown Algae! Oh no!?

My tank is about 4 weeks old now and has just about completed it's cycle (the nitrite level has fallen off significantly the past few days). I celebrated by adding 3 leopard cory's into the tank. They're doing just great, but while observing them I noticed a rust-like substance on my gravel, rocks and decorations, and even a couple of spots on the glass. Further research reveals that this is probably a brown algae growth.

So what's the best way to get rid of it???

  1. I'm almost certain that is actually cyano bacteria. It roots into your glass. It is there to stay. I had it in on of my tanks. My grandpa used my scrubber in his tank, so now he doubled my problem and screwed me, now I don't have a scrubber.

  2. My tank is over 2 months old and I started getting brown algae around the same time.  When I was reading about it on line they said that it is usually associated with new tanks and usually goes away after a couple of months.  A lot of mine is gone because I bought a algae eater.  On my plastic plants I just rinse and rub on them under the water faucet and most will fall off pretty easy.  Then I make sure I put them in water with conditioner before placing them back in my tank.

  3. i agree with reuben

  4. eww... I hate that stuff WITH A PASSION!! I have the same problem and what I do is frequent cleanings of the tank decorations and gravel. That's the only thing that works for me. I've tried that Algae Away stuff, but it doesn't work for the brown stuff (at least not for me...). Good Luck!!

  5. depending on how big ur tank is several plecos some large snails will do it.

Excessive feeding and sunlight is the culprit.

try feeding less and eliminate some sunlight (closing curtains relocating the tank if possible)
