Brown Bears grab a win in home opener - Volleyball news

The Brown University Women’s Volleyball Team (Bears) posted a great win over Fordham University (Rams), in the opening match of the Brown Invitational. The Pizzitola Sports Centre in Smithfield, Providence, Rhode Island set up the field of play for exciting
match on Friday night, September 16. The Brown University Bears performed exquisitely well at the home opener and held off Rams for 3-1 (25-19, 25-17, 25-27, and 25-21) victory. The Bears moved to an overall record of 3-5.
The Rams displayed good action on the court with a hitting percentage of .237, seven team-blocks and five service aces, but the Bears proved to be better and ousted opponent with .338 hitting percentage, eight blocks and seven aces. Brown's Maddie Lord stole
the show with match-high 20 kills. Pastore was the second best scorer of the match as she contributed 18 points on kills. The senior libero and co-captain of Bears, Annika Gliottone, did a great job and totalled 20 digs.
On the other hand, Brittany Daulton of Fordham went into double-double as she clipped 13 kills and 13 digs. Ewing registered 11 kills and four blocks. Likewise, Sara Konkel dished out 23 assists, two aces and eight digs as in a try to claim success for Ram.
Bears opened the match with powerful serves and claimed early points of the match. Alexandra Rieckhoff, the setter, assisted outside hitters to register more and more kills. In this regard, Lord actively participated in poking the ball in Rams’ half. She
spotted the rare gaps and directed off her shots in targeted areas to score points. Rams could not breakthrough the strong defence of Bears and dropped opening set by trailing behind with 6 points, 19-25.
After losing the first set, Rams started off hot in the following set. They attacked with Daulton who helped her team pick up a lead. For a moment, it seemed as if Rams would not let Bears to come back. However, Katrina Post put Bears back on track and they
led the scores with 10-7 at the first technical timeout. Afterwards, Rams struggled but couldn’t snatch the lead from Bears. The hosts continued to control the set and pushed Rams far behind. They seized their chances and moved to 2-0 by winning second set.
With two sets in hand, Bears started the third set with confident serves. Thunderous kills of Emma Pastore created enough trouble for Rams. However, Fordham put up a counter strike. They managed to attain momentum via good blocks by Krissy Buongiorno. The
exchange of long rallies started which created a new vibe in the game. Rams fought bravely and claimed third set at 27-25.
The match could have been easily tied in the fourth set as Rams jumped out to an early lead of 16-12. Nonetheless, Bears made a strong comeback and finished fourth set with 25-21. Fordham came really close to create the tie but eventually failed to do so.
Bears walked away with the tag of winners at the opening affair of Brown Invitational.
