Brown Panther to go for a warm up race in the CGA Geoffrey Freer Stakes at Newbury before the St Leger Stakes.
Manchester United striker Michael Owen owned Brown Panther who has been dwelling the handicap division more often than not, had his first Group 1 opportunity at Hamburg, Germany in the Deutsches Derby on 3 July, 2011, where the colt got beat and finished
fifth.
To be fair, the ground was a bit dodgy and the field wasn’t ideal to run a distance of 1 mile and 4 furlongs on a heavy ground.
It was an uphill struggle, but Germany is done and dusted, now the colt is ready to start in his next group 1 assignment when he enters the field for colts and fillies in the Group 1 Ladbrokes St Leger Stakes at Doncaster on 10 September, 2011.
The race is run at a distance of 1 mile, 6 furlongs and 132 yards and right now there are 36 colts and fillies lined up for the pre race entries.
Trainer Tom Dascombe is eyeing the CGA Geoffrey Freer Stakes at Newbury on 13 August, 2011 as a warm up race for the St Leger Stakes at Doncaster. The Newbury race could be the colt’s next start.
The son of Shirocco, out of Treble Heights by Unfuwain, Brown Panther has been kept off racing since his defeat in the Group 1 Deutsches Derby at Hamburg where the colt finished fifth.
Brown Panther was accompanied by Richard Kingscote, who roused the colt at the Hamburg fixture. In the field of 18 colts and fillies, 3 year olds and above, Brown Panther bolted off the gates and was sent to lead from the start.
The pair set up a good pace and they ran on well in to the straight, it was the heavy ground which kept Brown Panther off the pace even when he tried to quicken.
He failed to quicken with 2 furlongs to go, the likes of Waldpark, Earl of Tinsdal and Saltas took over the lead and kept him at bay till the end.
It was a good race none the less, despite the size of the field and the heavy conditions, Michael Owen owned Brown Panther was valiant in defeat.
