I have found two spiders now in my house. they look VERY similar to the Brown recluse pictures i have seen on the web. The only thing that is not adding up is the fact that they were found out in the open. One was crawling on my bedroom wall (right next to my bed). and the other was on my light fixture in the living room while it was on. What are the chances that these two spiders are actually brown recluse and should I expect more?I live in Alabama.

  1. why woukd u want to live there ?

  2. yes, the only reason why i am saying this is because they live in your area a lot!! .. its so likely for that to happen.

Make sure u get rid of them, before they bite you.. thats something you DON'T want to happen..

  3. if you were to see a brown recluse there would be no question if it was a BR or it was just similar.  There is a common house spider that is in the same family, even as poisonous, except it is not know to bite.  You didn't mention what time of day you saw them, if it was at night, they would be expected to crawl around.  If they turn out they are BR, no need to panic...in areas that they are commonly found, you could probably find them in almost every home.  Place sticky boards under the beds and behind furniture that is against baseboards.  They will catch wandering spiders and help you determine if you do have an issue to really worry about.

  5. did you swat one?... can you identify it for sure?... it's a 'fiddleback' if it's a recluse....

    see the picture here...

be sure what you've got before you scare yourself.... if it IS a recluse, then an exterminator is your next move....

  6. Without seeing pics of them I can't really advise on what they might be, but it's quite possible that they are just your regular house spider or garden spider that's gotten in.  The brown recluse tends to like dark places that are undisturbed like sheds, woodpiles outside, basements, etc.  I've lived in SC my entire 34 years and have only seen a couple.

I recommend that you remove all people and pets and bug bomb your house.  It's the best way to ensure you get rid of creepy crawlies.  It's worth the hours you have to spend away while treating.  If you don't want to bomb the place, I recommend Ortho Home Defense.  It's odorless, won't stain carpets, and last for 3 or 4 months.  They have a spray for inside and doorways as well as a granule that you sprinkle around your house.  We use it regularly and it's great for keeping bugs out.  I totally hate spiders and my #1 goal is to keep them outside!!

  7. Hi, here some info for you:

  8. Recluses make small retreat webs behind objects, they are never out in the open.

As you probably already know, you are in the right area for it to be a recluse but it is highly unlikely.  You can always have your house fumigated if you are still worried.

  9. Yes, they do live in Alabama!!!  Pesticides do not work on recluses, they actually like the pesticides because it kills other spiders and insects and that's what they eat.  Sticky traps are the most effective way in reducing the population.  A cheap place to get them is:

  10. They could very well be brown recluse.  If you can kill them, save them and call a pest control professional.  They should be able to identify the vermin and treat accordingly.
