Brown rust-like spots have appeared on the bottom of my cast iron bath which i cant remove with household cleaners.I think the spots have become more noticaeble since the kids slip mat was put in there some time ago.

Any ideas how to get rid of them?

  1. The traditional method of removal is to cut a Lemon in half, dip it in salt and rub over the stain. You can leave the lemon on for a while until the stain fades, then rinse away!

  2. Try rubbing gently with toothpaste

  3. I have a very expensive bath we got from Germany so didn't want to damage the surface with all the costly sprays on the market. I got in touch with the manufacturer of the bath and they recommended a product called HG (Hagesan) Bath Shine which can bought from Lakeland Limited.

It states on the back instructions ' for the removal of difficult to clean build up stains, such as limescale, yellow stains, rust stains etc it is best to use HG (Hagesan) Blue. This is another of their products.

I would check them out and see which one suits your bath.

PS I noticed in my local Homebase they carry a selection of HG products so you might be able to get one of them there.

    Good luck

  4. The brown spots are rust from the cast iron body of the bath.

You can use slightly abrasive cleaners to try to reduce the stains but unfortunately the enamel has been breached due to age, local chips or damage etc.  It got worse with the baby mat because it retained water in the suction cups. (water + Iron = Rust)

The only permanent cure is to have the enamel coating replaced. This is quite expensive. However there are DIY kits available.
