Question:

Brownie Scout fun patch... question?

My daughter is a Brownie- just started a few months ago and we're having a lot of fun with it. I'm not sure what to do here- maybe you can help. Remember, we're both new at scouting!

The troop has been asked to volunteer at an Easter function for a few hours. They will help register kids for egg hunts. I want to get the girls an easter fun patch (they don't have many patches yet and thought this would be fun and nice). Do I need to ask the leaders if it's okay for me to gift the girls a patch? I don't want money from them- I'll buy them. And, do I get all the girls one or do I only give to those who show up to volunteer???

  1. I presume the leader is aware of the event and has okayed your asking the parents for permission for their daughters to be there.

If so, the a fun patch would be a great idea - our council has many available in the council store.

Only the girls who participate get a patch, and they ought to pay for them from troop funds, as that it was the troop earns money for - to pay for supplies & patches & events.

    Sounds cool - have fun!

  2. It should definitely be only those who show up who get a badge.

I'm in the UK, but here you'd have to ask the leaders because that's how the system works - they have to sign off on any badge the child is awarded, even if it's being "tested" by someone else (this is common with things like swimming badges).

  3. That's really something the leader is in charge of.  As someone who has been involved in scouting, I find the idea of a non-leader parent buying patches to be rather strange.

Only the girls who go get a patch for the event.

  4. i would talk to the leader first. maybe she is thinking about buying them too? you only give them to the girls who show up and volunteer.

  5. Only the girls that show up and it should be fine for you to buy them.

  6. As a leader i can tell you that we love it when the parents show an interest in things that benefit the girls.

At the next meeting, or the day of the event, just tell the leader what your idea is and ask them if they agree.  I know with our council the leaders are the ones who have to go and get the patches or fill out the form for the parent to pick them up.

As a rule of thumb though the patches are only given to the girls that attend the function that they are presented for.

  7. I have two troops myself, so maybe I can help.  First of all do check with your troop leader, perhaps there is already a patch involved. If not just ask her your question, if it were me I would appreciate the donation GREATLY, especially since we work with such a limited budget. You would only get the girls who participated one though. You have a wonderful idea and I hope your leaders appreciate your thoughtfulness!
