Bruce Buck reveals Andre Villas-Boas could be http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Chelsea-c38786’s long-term manager urges youth academy development
Chelsea chairman Bruce Buck hinted new Blues’ manager Andre Villas-Boas could be in charge of the London club for the long-term. The former http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/FC-Porto-c39186 boss took over from Carlo Ancelotti in the summer transfer window after the Italian manager was sacked for
failing to deliver any silverware in his second season at the club.
The London club have been regularly switching managers since Russian billionaire Roman Abramovich took over the club in 2003. However, according to Buck, they could finally be settling down with Villas-Boas as their manager for the next 10-15 years.
Chelsea’s main competitors, Manchester United and http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Alex-c4752 Ferguson and Arsene Wenger, respectively. While Ferguson has been in charge of the Red Devils for 25 years, Wenger took charge of the Gunners
in 1996.
The Blues chairman admitted Chelsea were aiming for consistency in terms of their manager and were in fact envious of Manchester United and Arsenal. He revealed that they were on the look-out for the right manager and felt they had found their man in Villas-Boas.
Buck said in an interview:
“We do envy Arsene Wenger at Arsenal and Sir Alex Ferguson at Manchester United in terms of longevity, but it shouldn't be longevity for longevity's sake.
It has to be the right guy in the http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Job-c18684 for 10 or 15 years and, in light of Andre's age, he may well be that guy.”
He continued:
“Everyone thinks his age might have been a negative but it's a positive.”
While Villas-Boas has been criticized for his age, at only 33 years old he is as old as some of the players at Stamford Bridge, but Buck did not think that was a cause for concern. The chairman believed the fact that he was young could actually go on to
ensure his long term career at Chelsea as the manager.
While tackling the issue of the transfer policy at the club, Buck revealed the club’s desire to develop the youth academy. With the Blues amongst the big spending clubs, they are now aiming to cut down on spending big on buying players and instead want home
grown players.
Bruce said:
“The problem has been transfer fees paid to other clubs for new players and that's probably our biggest expense.
The way we've tried to attack that, not as successfully as we'd have liked to be honest, is by putting a lot of money into the academy.”
Buck believed Chelsea could save up to £30 million if they had players coming in from the lower ranks every season instead of the Blues having to invest in new players. In the summer transfer window alone, the Blues spent £71.5 million and Buck feels that
is the one place where the club can limit spending.
