Bruce Chen impresses as Kansas City Royals defeat Detroit Tigers 3-1 – Part 1
Bruce Chen put in a tremendous pitching performance as he threw for six innings striking-out seven and allowing only three hits as the Kansas City Royals beat the Detroit Tigers 3-1 on Saturday, April 9 at Comerica Park in Detroit.
The Royals have managed to tie up the three game series at 1-all, with the decider to be played on Sunday.
The Tigers struggled throughout the game, as they were unable to score off the brilliant pitching of Chen. He managed to contain the Tigers’ offence as he struck-out seven. Chen was pitching with great confidence as his fielders backed him up.
"Chen shows that you don't have to throw 95 miles an hour to get outs when you have command of every pitch," Detroit manager Jim Leyland said. "You can throw backdoor sliders and you can paint the black. All we can do is tip our hat to him. He pitched a
fantastic game."
Alcides Escobar and Wilson Betemit got Kansas City some runs in the second inning to take the score to 2-0 in favour of the Royals. Jeff Francoeur hit a sacrifice in the ninth that allowed Alex Gordon to score to take the Royals score to 3-0.
The only score for the Tigers came from Ryan Raburn’s home-run off Joakim Soria in the ninth inning. Detroit struggled throughout the game to get some runs on the scoreboard. The brilliant pitching by Chen literally incapacitated the Tigers’ batting line-up.
Phil Coke put in a decent pitching performance for the Tigers, as he managed to strike-out seven and allow only three hits and two runs in just over six innings that he threw. It seems that the Tigers pitching were decent, but their batting line-up left
a lot to be desired.
The Royals came together as team as their pitcher Chen showed his brilliance on the mound. He was able to contain the mighty Tigers’ offence throughout the game. Kansas City will be filled with confidence as they beat the Tigers through sheer hard work and
perfect fielding support for their pitcher.
The Tigers were unable to score for the majority of the game. It seems their offence was having a hard time against Chen and his pitching variations. Many teams from around the League will be taking notice of not only Chen’s brilliant pitching, but how he
