Bruce Chen shines as Kansas City Royals defeat Baltimore Orioles 9-1 – MLB Update
Kansas City Royals’ Bruce Chen pitched six scoreless innings to beat Baltimore Orioles 9-1 at Kauffman Stadium, Kansas City on Thursday, May 5.
The starting pitcher gave up two hits and allowed one run in the first inning following which he remained completely unhittable. All the same, the Royals’ defence did not falter either to remain behind. The Royals’ hitters played aggressively against Chris
Tillman and kept building pressure with more runs.
However, it was Chen whose feat was conspicuously great. He took on Baltimore’s hitters effectively and allowed them no chance to score. "[Chen] makes a good presentation when you're really ultra-aggressive off him," Showalter said. "He knows who he is and
what he has to do to be successful. That's why he has been around a while. He knows that more is not always better, and he keeps tinkering and giving you different looks."
But judging from the past record of Kansas City, there was hardly any characteristic resilience that the team could take pride in. The Royals had lost two of their games against Baltimore. It was this reason that the team manager came up with a careful note
after the victory. He specially attributed the win to Chen. "That's the general consensus, yeah. I don't want to say we're playing better than we anticipated because we came into this thing anticipating playing pretty well," Yost said. "The kid's producing
there. He's in a league of his own."
When Chen came out to pitch for Kansas City, Adam Jones singled to right to score the first run for Baltimore.
However, Chris Tillman was put to task by Wilson Betemit with his three-run homer to the wild cheer of the crowd. Betemit struck a massive hit to earn the three runs following which Mike Aviles did his job, as he scored a single to pile up the lead for Kansas
City to 4-1.
Chen then thundered and incapacitated the Orioles’ hitters to maintain the lead. After Chris Getz’s single in the second inning, which took the score to 5-1 for Kansas City, Melky Cabrera hit a two-run homer to take the lead to 7-1. Kansas City’s hitters
did not stop there, as Billy Butler scored another single in the same inning, making it 8-1 for the Royals.
Chris Tillman gave up eight runs in four innings that forced the Orioles to replace the pitcher. However, that did not stop Kansas from scoring, as Josh Rupe was punished by Melky Cabrera who homered a single to earn the 9th run for the team.
Jeremy Jeffress pitched a shut-out inning to enable Kansas City an emphatic 9-1 victory over the Orioles.
