Bruce Chen sparks as Kansas City Royals beat Cleveland Indians 2-1 - MLB Update
Kansas City Royals’ starter, Bruce Chen had a tremendous day with his pitching as he threw just over seven innings and struck-out four batters with an ERA of 3.94 in the Royals’ 2-1 victory over the Cleveland Indians at Progressive Field, Cleveland on August
28.
In the first inning, Royals took their first run when Jeff Francoeur hit a grounder into fielder’s choice to first base and Alex Gordon scored a single run. Later on, Billy Butler got out to second base and Melky Cabrera moved to third base. On the other
side, Indians’ batters also smashed their initial run to tie the game 1-1, at the bottom of first inning.
Carlos Santana walked and Ezequiel Carrera posted a tie run for the Indians. Jason Donald moved to third base and Asdrubal Cabrera occupied second base to end the first inning. Royals’ second baseman, Johnny Giavotella walked during second inning but the
rest of his team-mates got out as at right-field Alcides Escobar flied out and Mike Moustakas grounded out to pitcher without giving their team even a single run.
On the other side, Jerad Head reached towards second base on an infield single while Jack Hannahan struck-out swinging and Carrera grounded out to pitcher without adding any runs at the bottom of second inning. Royals went ahead 2-1 in the third inning by
taking one run. Butler completed a tie-breaking run when Moustakas drove a single-run shot towards right-field and Francoeur occupied second base to complete the third inning.
Chen surrendered just five hits, one run, two walks and one earned run on his 104 pitches. Speaking to reporters, he said, “I am feeling good. I feel like I am throwing my pitches really well. It was a very good day for us.”
Indians’ manager, Manny Acta said, “It's a challenge, but everybody has their issues. I'm not going to sit here and complain. That's part of the game. I knew we couldn't survive some of those injuries. We have to continue to battle.”
The remaining six innings were score-less as the pitchers threw accurately. In the sixth inning, Brayan Pena and Giavotella both lined out to left-field and Escobar flied out without scoring even a single run.
Despite this thrilling victory, Royals lost the three-game series 2-1 against Indians, at Cleveland.
