Bruce Gradkowski will get the start in Oakland this Sunday
Bruce Gradkowski will get the start at quarterback for the Oakland Raiders this Sunday against the Arizona Cardinals, according the the National Football League’s website on Wednesday.
Gradkowski replaced Jason Campbell last week, and provided enough of a spark for the Raiders to beat the St. Louis Rams 16-14. Gradkowski will replace Campbell under centre in week three and there is no
indication if this move is temporary or not. Gradkowski will practice with the starters for the remainder of this week’s practice and the team will go from there on whether this move might be permanent depending on his play.
But Gradkowski coming in to take the reins of the Silver and Black after their projected starter struggles in the season is nothing new for the backup. He came in late towards the end of last season and
took over for JaMarcus Russell. This season, Gradkowski is replacing Campbell, who was acquired from the Washington Redskins on April 24 for a fourth-round draft pick next year.
Campbell, 28, had struggled during this year’s pre-season and was banged up in an exhibition match. His uninspired play carried over to the regular season and Coach Tom Cable decided to bench his starting
quarterback after only two weeks. In his defence, Campbell’s numbers were horrific as he completed only 8 of 15 pass attempts for 87 yards, while throwing one interception, taking two sacks and fumbled twice against the Rams.
The Raiders were banking that Campbell was going to be their franchise quarterback. Owner Al Davis spoke very highly of him prior to the 2010 season. Not so sure what Davis is thinking about him now. The
Raiders are back to square one in terms of trying to find a suitable player that can lead this team and be their quarterback moving forward.
