Bruce Vaughan takes sole lead at the Constellation SENIOR PLAYERS Championship
Bruce Vaughan fired a bogey-free six-under par 64 in the opening round of the Constellation SENIOR PLAYERS Championship to take the lead at the Fox Chapel Golf Club in Pittsburgh, on Thursday, June 28, 2012.
Vaughan got off to a confident start and recorded four birdies on the front nine to go four-under for the round. Another two birdies on the back nine allowed him to take a one-stroke margin over Fred Funk.
The highlight of his performance includes a 30-foot putt for a birdie on the third hole, 20-footer on the 15th and a chip shot from a green-side bunker for a birdie on the 18th hole.
At the end of the round, he said that by no means was it an easy golf course and creating birdie chances was a difficult task. The only thing that saved him from suffering bogeys was his putting.
According to him, he needs to remain consistent in the next three rounds if he has to win the tournament this year.
"When greens are this fast you've got to have a really big imagination," Vaughn said, flashing a toothy grin.
"It's just the first round. It's a matter of doing it for three more days. I think I can, I've done it before, but it's a matter of going out and doing it".
In the meantime, the US captain for the Presidents Cup, Fred Couples, carded a four-under par 66 to share the third position.
He recorded two birdies each on the front and back nine of the course. He believes that he was lucky to avoid bogeys throughout the round while putting an impressive score on the leaderboard.
"I feel lucky I got through this round with that score," he said. "I have a lot of rest before tomorrow. I'm really, really stiff, though. I don't know exactly what's going on and I'm not getting too much sleep, so I'm not really feeling very well".
Tom Lehman, Michael Allen and Joe Daley were the other three players to match his score. Last year’s Presidents Cup captain for the International team, Greg Norman, was further a stroke back to tie for the seventh position.
