Question:

Bruising, and Veins?

I started running after giving it up 7 yrs ago, and while my health isn't as good as it used to be. I think I'm doing pretty good doing four miles per day, but I'd like to know why I'm brusing along the shins-they're not painful but I get *pings* thru out the day.

It looks like someone has battered me, could it just be my anemia or is it a sign of impending injury? When I got hit by a car 7 yrs ago (which is why I gave up my running), I had a ''rope'' vein that I was told would disappear, where the blood just kind of clotted, but now it's 8" long and painful to touch.

Any insight?

  1. You should get medical opinion before you start running, especially after an injury... Bruising is not normal.

  2. You're probably more of an expert about your condition, so I'll give you a veteran runner's perspective.

First off, you are doing great at 4 miles a day.  A good deal of runners can develop shin splints which are very treatable.  However, the bruising is not a normal condition for most runners.  I would find a trusted vascular specialist and let them know that you want running as a part of your life.  Until then use a warm wrap on your shins AFTER your cool down period.

I can sympathize about having running stripped from you, so if you get any bad news, don't give up.  I cross trained for years before I was healthy enough to run again.  Now I am able to do triathlons because of it.  Good luck!

  3. ask your doctor.  the injury you got 7 years ago could not have healed correctly, and the running may have ruptured the injury.
