Brumbies number eight Ita Vaea cited for tackle on Reds’ winger Digby Ioane – Rugby news
South African, New Zealand and Australian Rugby (SANZAR) citing commissioner has called out the Brumbies number eight, Ita Vaea, for his dangerous tackle on Reds’ winger Digby Ioane, which left the winger unconscious.
Both teams were playing their 14 match of the 2011 Super Rugby championship at Lange Park, Brisbane on Saturday June 4. Brumbies defeated the conference leaders 22 – 14 to give their fans something to cheer about.
The incident occurred during the 48th minutes of Saturday’s clash in which Reds’ winger Digby Ioane made a run but was tackled by the Brumbies player. Later the replays showed that Ita Vaea elbow and shoulder met Ioane’s jaw and head with brute
force. The Reds’ winger was carried of the ground by the medical staff on their medical buggy after he failed to get up to his feet and remained on ground at the end of the tackle. Dom Shipperley replaced Ioane as the match resumed after a delay of approximately
two and half minutes.
In the absence of their star first choice winger, Ioane, Reds’ never really looked able to reduce the deficit and take the lead in the game. Meanwhile, the referee Garratt Williamson did not penalise Vaea during the match.
Later, at the end of the match, the citing commissioner cited Vaea for his dangerous tackle. Citing commissioner has charged Vaea with a violation of the International Rugby Board law 10.4(e) that relates to dangerous tackling of a player above the shoulders
and around the neck region.
The commissioner has directed the ACT Brumbies Ita Vaea to appear before the SANZAR Judicial hearing at Brisbane on Sunday, June 5. The hearing will be chaired by SANZAR Judicial Officer, Paul Tully, and will be held at the Queensland Rugby Union office
at Ballymore.
Even though the Reds lost the match, they became the first team to secure their play-off place in the Super xv play-offs. Reds have two more matches to play in the 2011 super rugby championship round games as Reds will play Western Force and Chiefs on Saturday
June 11 and June 18 respectively.
