Brunei men’s junior hockey team's failure in U-18 Junior Asia Cup
The struggle towards winning the 3rd edition of the Under-18 Junior Asia Cup, which is currently underway in Singapore, has come to an end for the Brunei squad.
The junior team only succeeded to win one match out of their four appearances at the tournament that started off with total ten teams.
The effort met a full stop after facing their third defeat against Chinese Taipei by a 1-4 defeat that was played yesterday, June 22. The team managed to open score three goals on the overall score-sheet in all of their matches and conceded a total of 34
goals to their opponents.
After two humongous defeats one after the other from the host team, Singapore at 12-0 and Pakistan at 18-0, respectively, the next day, Brunei’s confidence has gone down the drain.
However, they boosted their courage and managed a win over Kazakhstan by 2-0 on June 21, which was the junior side’s first ever victory.
In 2002, the inaugural event of the Junior Asia Cup was held in Perak, Malaysia where Brunei’s junior side hardly even managed to penetrate into the opponent’s net.
As a result, Brunei disappointingly lost all the three matches against Indonesia, Malaysia and Chinese Taipei in this first edition of the tournament.
Moreover, the Berandai Dadong’s led team had their last international meet in the 2010 Asean School Games, held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia where the team's performance was a complete failure with four defeats from the host team, Malaysia at 8-0, Singapore
at 7-0, Thailand 4-0 and Indonesia at 1-0.
In the meantime, Pakistan, the title defenders, are the favourites of the U-18 Asia Cup with an unbeatable record of 41 goals with a recent win over the host team, Singapore by 6-0, under the Group A matches.
The team seems to have the potential to take the title home yet again after their last victory in the 2009 Under-18 Junior Asia Cup hockey tournament that had taken place in Yangon, Myanmar.
Pakistan managed to defeat Malaysia in the final match by 4-3, securing the top podium spot.
