Bruno Alves backs Zenit St. Petersburg to win more than one trophy next season – Football news
Zenit St. Petersburg defender, http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Bruno-Alves-c8108, has urged his side to reclaim the Russian Premier League title next season after losing it to CSKA Moscow this season.
The defending league champions failed to win the league title for the third time in a row after finishing two points behind CSKA in the standings.
The Russian outfit, meanwhile, failed to reach the later stages of the Russian Cup and UEFA Europa League competition respectively. Luciano Spalletti’s men were denied a chance to reach the domestic cup final following their 0-1 defeat in the semi-final
of the competition against Anzhi Makhachkala.
On the European front, Zenit failed to progress to the quarter-finals of the tournament after recording a 1-2 defeat against http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/FC-Basel-c39079 on aggregate.
However, Alves is still confident that the St. Petersburg can challenge for more than one trophy next season.
“We would have been the champions this year had we not dropped precious points against Dynamo Moscow. We tried to do everything in reach to close down the gap but, unfortunately, it did not work out. If we look at the season briefly, we can compile many
reason behind our below par campaign. Some people say that we did not play up to our potential. Perhaps, the situation would have been different if we maintained our lead. I am confident that we will be stronger next season. I think we will challenge for more
than one trophy next season,” The former http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/FC-Porto-c39186 man was quoted as saying.
The 31-year-old defender, who moved to Petrovsky stadium in a record breaking 20 million Euro transfer fee from Porto back in 2010, has been heavily linked with a move to Fenerbahce this summer.
If speculations are to be believed, the Turkish Super Lig club wants to sign the Portuguese stopper, who has scored 3 goals in 100 appearances during his stay at St. Petersburg club, in order to sort out their defensive problems.
Though the amount of transfer has not been disclosed, media claims that Fenerbahce are not going to offer more than five million Euros.
