Brunstrom/Marx plonk Haas/Waske to reach quarters – Gerry Weber Open 2012
Swedish-German duo, Johan Brunstrom and Philipp Marx, trashed the local wildcard entrants, Tommy Haas and Alexander Waske, in straight sets at the Gerry Weber Open 2012 on Monday. They formulated a 6-4, 6-2 victory against the Germans to charge into the
final eight at this ATP (Association of Tennis Professionals) World Tour 250 series event taking place in Halle, Germany.
The Swedish-German collaboration of Brunstrom and Marx displayed brilliant co-ordination to conquer the Germans who had support of the crowd. Both teams were battling each other for the first time and after earning this victory, they comfortably advanced
into the quarter-finals at this outdoor grass court event.
Brunstrom and Marx thundered into the Gerry Weber Stadion and drew the first blood in the opening game to take the initial lead. They continued displaying superb attributes and swiped in their entire serves without facing any trouble, ultimately sealing
the opener by winning six games to four. The winning tandem cashed in the lone break opportunity to inch towards the glory.
Ranked 186th in the South African Airways ATP World Tour Doubles Rankings, Brunstrom and Marx kept momentum running into the follow-up set and jumped to a 5-1 lead after breaking their rivals’ serve twice. They held their serve once more and plucked
the set with a 6-2 success. The Swedish-German pair blocked both breakpoints they came across to keep their entire serves and cashed in two out of three break opportunities to earn the fame.
Summing up the winning junction’s performance, Brunstrom and Marx spilled more double faults and hammered fewer aces. They also clobbered a lower first serve share of 65 per cent as compared to their opponents’ 85 per cent but magnificently marked 24 out
of 48 points on it. The winning tandem fired a single ace but nudged up 56 points as opposed to the Germans’ 34 points which made the difference.
Next challenge for the Swedish-German duo is the winner of the match between Germans, Benjamin Becker and Philipp Petzschner, and the top seeds, Pakistan’s Aisam-Ul-Haq Qureshi and Netherlands’ Jean-Julien Rojer. Qureshi won this tournament last year with
India’s Rohan Bopanna.
