Brunstrom/Shamasdin defeats Bastl/Sadecky to clear the opening round – Suisse Open Gstaad 2011
Fourth seeded duo of Johan Brunstrom of Sweden and Adil Shamasdin of Canada faced no real challenge to dispose of the local wildcard pair of George Bastl and Alexander Sadecky in the opening round of Credit Agricole Suisse Open
Gstaad on Thursday afternoon.
Being part of the ATP (Association of Tennis Professionals) World Tour 250 clay-court swing, the competition was held at the Credit Agricole Arena in Gstaad, Switzerland. Brunstrom and Shamasdin had no difficulty in wrapping up
victory in straight sets 7-5, 6-3, taking one hour and sixteen minutes of play to earn a place in the quarter-final draws of the tournament.
Like any other doubles game, Brunstrom and Shamasdin kept the rallies short and professional in the matchup and gave minimum opportunities to their opponents to have their impact on the game. Bastl and Sadecky posed some solid
resistance in the opening set to stretch it to a total of 12 games but lost their focus towards the end to fall back early. The Swiss duo failed to contain their belligerent opponents in the next set and let them away with an easy victory in the end.
The opening set took off with aggressive approaches from the both pairs and exchanges of assertive winners were seen on regularity. Brunstrom and Shamasdin delivered 68 per cent of their on target and secured 17 first serve points,
with their opponents following them with 13 points in the opening set. No serve breaks were seen in the first 10 games of the matchup, levelling the scores at 5-5 and it appeared as if the set will end up in a tie breaker round. A timely serve break from the
fourth seeded duo in the next game prove decisive in the opener, closing out the first set in Brunstrom and Shamasdin’s name at 7-5.
Bastl and Sadecky failed to pose some serious resistance in the following set and looked to have lost their steam. They suffered a serve break in the third game to fall back at 1-3, with Brunstrom and Shamasdin continuing to play
in their winning momentum. The fourth seeded pair reeled off 16 more first serve points in the second set to inch closer to victory and nailed a decisive break point in the ninth game to close out the contest at 6-3.
Brunstrom and Shamasdin will play against the team of Julian Knowle of Austria and Igor Zelenay from Slovakia in the quarter-final matchup to get through to the semis of the tournament.
