Brunstrom/Shamasdin down Gremelmayr/Kamke in the quarterfinal –Hall of Fame Championships 2011
Seeded at number four in the tournament, the duo of Johan Brunstrom of Sweden and Adil Shamasdin of Canada forced its way to the semi-finals of the Campbell’s Hall of Fame Tennis Championships doubles. They took down the unseeded
German pair of Denis Gremelmayr and Tobias Kamke in the quarter-final clash of the ATP (Association of Tennis Professionals) World Tour 250 event.
The contest took place at the International Tennis Hall of Fame in Newport, Rhode Island, United States, with Brunstrom and Shamasdin devastating their opponents in straight sets, 6-2, 6-0, in less than an hour’s play. Gremelmayr
and Kamke hung in the contest for merely 43 minutes before they crumbled against the fury of the fourth seeded pair, who bettered them in every segment of the game.
Brunstrom and Shamasdin displayed their outstanding coordination and dominated every bit of the contest with their aggressive approach. They gave no chance to Gremelmayr and Kamke to settle down in the competition and took hold
of the game from the very first minute to orchestrate most of the rallies en route to victory.
The fourth seeded duo was off to a blistering start in the opening set and made their intentions clear right from the beginning. Brunstrom and Shamasdin delivered 68 per cent first serve on target and grabbed 16 out of 19 total
serve points in the opener to get the competitive edge over their opponents. The Germans failed to craft any break opportunity in the first set and their bleak baseline defences allowed Brunstrom and Shamasdin to sting two timely serve breaks to reach set
point at 5-2. The fourth seeded pair bagged the opening set at 6-2 when Kamke thumped a backhand into the net.
Things exacerbated for the Germans later, as Brunstrom and Shamasdin proved totally merciless to them in the second set. They broke Gremelmayr and Kamke in every single serve game, nailing three consecutive break points to rocket
away to victory by wrapping up the set in just 20 minutes of play. The German duo not only botched to break their opponents once again but utterly failed to hold their serve as well. Brunstrom and Shamasdin registered victory on the most authoritative note
at 6-0, advancing to the semis of the Campbell’s Hall of Fame Tennis Championships.
Brunstrom and Shamasdin will face the second seeded Brazilian pair of Marcelo Melo and Andre Sa on Saturday for a place in the final of the tournament.
