Brunstrom/Skupski, Cerretani/Shamasdin win in first round – Eckental Challenger 2011
The men’s doubles first round matches of the 2011 Eckental Challenger took place on October 31, 2011. Johan Brunstrom (Sweden) teamed up with Ken Skupski (England) and defeated Ruben Bemelmans (Belgium) and his partner Olivier
Charroin (France), 6-4, 1-1.
The team of Brunstrom/Skupski were in the lead from the start of the first set as they delivered four aces and conceded a single double fault. However, they could save only fifty-percent of their breakpoints, as they could save
two out of four.
Bemelmans/Charrion were better than their opponents for they saved six out of seven break points, but still lost the first set 6-4. In the second set, the two teams could only win one game each as the match ended for the Brunstrom/Skupski
had to retire.
In another men’s doubles first round match played on October 31, 2011, the Polish team of Tomasz Bednarek and Mateusz Kowalczyk played against James Cerretani (USA) and Adil Shamasdin (Canada). The match was an evenly contested
one as both teams played valiantly to secure a win, but it was the team of Cerretani/Shamasdin which won the match 7-6(2), 6-4.
The winning team scored only one ace in the entire match with four double faults. However, their opponents delivered seven aces and had six double faults. The Polish team scored higher number of aces but they also conceded six
double faults, which showed they were feeling a bit nervous against their opponents.
In the first set, Cerretani/Shamasdin did not score any ace and had four double faults but did manage to save both of their breakpoints. Their first serve winning ratio was also higher than their opponents.
The first set entered into a tiebreaker which Bednarek/Kowalczyk could have won but Cerretani/Shamasdin won it, 7-6(2), due to their consistency. In the second set, the Polish team did not get any room to score a lead, as Cerretani/Shamasdin
did not concede any double fault and saved the only breakpoint they got.
In the second set, the Polish duo was again looking nervous and desperate to win their match as they did score two aces but on the expense of four double faults. They were also unsuccessful in saving the breakpoint they got.
During the match, Cerretani/Shamasdin had a 65% first serve success rate for they were delivering their serves without any errors. On the other hand, the Polish team had a 58% success rate in terms of first serve winning percentage.
The last time these two teams played each other was during the 2010 Belgrade Open where the Polish team won their match in straight sets. This time, however, their opponents had an upper hand for their decent shots and consistent
run throughout the match.
