The player hopes that the friendly against Finland will boost his chances of playing in West Brom’s opening game of the Premier League season. The Baggies will face http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Liverpool-c39809 on Saturday and the captain hopes that he gets to play a part in the game.
Brunt is still catching up on his fitness after being out on the sidelines due to a calf strain. The injury had kept him out of the side during the summer but flared up in Belfast during first team training.
The injury worsened and prevented him from featuring in the team’s pre-season tour. Brunt had returned home early after suffering the injury, but is now back in action as he came on as a substitute in West Brom’s 2-0 victory over Nottingham Forest.
West Brom manager Steve Clarke is not exactly thrilled with the timing of the international friendly as it takes place three days before the start of the new Premier League season. Brunt on the other hand believes that the timing could not have been more
impeccable and will help him get better and sharp.
Speaking to the press about his comeback, Brunt said:
"Internationals at this stage are never good timing but, from my point of view, having missed virtually every friendly, it will be good to get some minutes under my belt.”
"I should then get a better idea of how fit I am and hopefully I'll be involved in the first league game against Liverpool at the weekend.”
He added: “It's been a rubbish pre-season from my point of view. I went back to Belfast during the summer, went for a run, and just felt my calf go. Then it flared up again in http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Sweden-c3015 but I felt okay against Forest so touch wood it is now fine."
The player operates as an attacking midfielder and a winger, and has captained the side since February 2011. Brunt has been instrumental in West Brom’s rise back to the Premier League in the 2009/2010 season and was also a key figure in West Brom’s top 10
finish in the league last season.
