Bryan Brothers dump Fleming/Hutchins in the doubles semi-final – Apia International Sydney 2011
World number one duo of Bob Bryan and Mike Bryan faced limited resistance in the semi-final clash of the Apia International Sydney, outplaying the unseeded British pair of Colin Fleming and Ross Hutchins on Friday. The top seeded
Americans took merely 63 minutes to wrap up victory in straight sets, 6-4, 6-2, marching into the final of their season-opening ATP (Association of Tennis Professionals) World Tour 250 event.
Being played on the hard courts of the NSW Tennis Centre in Sydney, Australia, the contest witnessed another quality display of sheer coordination and skill from the mighty Bryan Brothers. The Americans received a bye to the second
round of the tournament and dumped the combination of Leander Paes and Radek Stepanek to reach the round of four. They carried on their winning momentum in the semi-final round as well, overwhelming Fleming and Hutchins in barely one hour to earn a title shot
in the final.
The local crowd witnessed a dominating exhibition of high quality from the top seeded duo on Friday. Like any other doubles matchup, Bob and Mike kept the rallies short and professional to cruise through the games with the utmost
ease. Both brothers were equally efficient with their game play at the net and converted a number of juicy volleys into cross-court winners. Their 65 per cent precise first serve earned them 23 out of 30 points in the matchup and they cashed in four out of
11 break chances en route to victory.
Fleming and Hutchins had a cautious start to the contest and held their serves in the opening three games before drawing first blood in the sixth game. The Bryans retaliated immediately and stung two straight serve breaks to turn
the tables on the Britons, closing out the first set at 6-4.
Bob and Mike kept their momentum rolling in the following set and two cracking break points flew them to 5-1 in no time. The top seeded duo convincingly served out of the match at 6-2, booking a place in the final of the Apia International
Sydney, where it will face the combination of Matthew Ebden and Jarkko Nieminen to win the season-opening doubles championship title.
