Bryan Brothers oust Dodig/Melo to capture the crown – Wimbledon Championships 2013
Bryan brothers, Bob and Mike Bryan, conquered the Croatian-Brazilian duo, Ivan Dodig and Marcelo Melo, in a four-set nail-biter at the Wimbledon Championships 2013 on Saturday.
After recording a 3-6, 6-3, 6-4, 6-4 victory, the high flying brothers achieved a historic Bryan Bros. Slam as they became the first team ever to hold all four Grand Slam titles and Olympic gold medal.
The top seeded duo made a dismal entry at the Centre Court. However, they found the right path afterwards and ultimately conquered their opponents in their second encounter. The teams previously battled each other at the Rogers Cup last season and with this
triumph, the Americans maintained their winning record against Dodig and Melo.
Mike Bryan was quoted in a post match presser, “It's hard to even dream that we'd have the slam, all four at one time. It all started back after we won the gold. It just felt like a huge pressure was released. Went on to win the Open and had a great summer.
This year we've been on an amazing tear.”
Bob Bryan stated in a post match interview after stealing the show, “It was a very rough start. Those guys played hot. Our legs were a little Jello-y. It helps to have a three out of five set match. You have time. We found our rhythm, got a hold, and then
started stacking hold after hold and added pressure on them until we got the breaks.”
The Croatian-Brazilian tandem made a thunderous start in this match. The reeled off the opening five games before Bryans could hold on. Despite losing their serve in the seventh game, Dodig and Melo held their serve once more and bagged the opener with a
6-3 win.
Bryans turned the tables on the Croatian-Brazilian pair in the following set. They broke their rivals’ opening game and jumped to a 3-0 lead. The twins held their remaining serves with poise and sealed the set by winning six games to three.
The world number one doubles team kept momentum rolling in the third set. They drew the first blood in the third game and leaped to a 3-1 lead. Bryans smoothly held their remaining serves and clinched the set with a 6-4 score line.
In the fourth set, Bryans required a single break of serve in the ninth game to pocket the set with a 6-4 score line.
This was Bryans’ 91st team title and their ninth crown this season. They conquered the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club for the third time. Their previous victories came in 2006 (defeated Santoro and Zimonjic) and 2011 (overpowered Robert Lindstedt
and Horia Tecau).
