Bryan Brothers oust Huey/Janowicz to capture the crown – BNP Paribas Open 2013
American twins, Bob and Mike Bryan, rallied past the Philippine-Polish tandem, Treat Conrad Huey and Jerzy Janowicz, in a three-set thriller at the BNP Paribas Open 2013 on Sunday. They summed up a 6-3, 3-6, 10-6 victory against
their unseeded rivals to grab their first title at this ATP (Association of Tennis Professionals) Masters 1000 event taking place in Indian Wells, United States.
Seeded top at this hard court tournament, Bryans lost their track in the second set. However, they showed brilliant tennis and eventually grabbed their maiden Indian Wells crown.
Mike Bryan was quoted in a courtside interview after bagging the match:
"It feels really good to finally win our home tournament in Indian Wells. I thought we played a great match tie-break. It was kind of meant to be after being down match points. We came through in three super breakers, so we had
a little luck on our side, which was nice.”
The left-handed Bob on the other hand reflected about grabbing this crown:
"Winning in Australia was one of our biggest goals of the year and probably our next goal was to win this tournament, since it has eluded us over the years. We've always had friends and family here, so it was nice to finally be
able to give them this gift."
The American duo made a thunderous start in the match. They smoothly held their entire serves with conviction. Bob and Mike cashed a break opportunity and eventually pulled out the opener with a 6-3 score line.
Huey and Janowicz on the other hand rebounded in the proceeding set. They managed to ward off all the breakpoints they came across and capitalised on one break chance to get the breakthrough. As a result, the Philippine-Polish
junction managed to grab the equaliser with a 6-3 success.
In the deciding set, the American veterans re-gained their strength. They dominated in this deciding tie-breaker and eventually clicked the decider with a 10-6 win.
Overall, the Bryans dominated throughout the match. They clobbered a better first serve share of 64 per cent as compared to their rivals’ 60 per cent and amazingly marked 30 out of 36 points on it. The Americans fended off six
out of seven breakpoints they came across and converted one out of eight break chances to their advantage.
This was Bryans fourth title of the season. They are coming from winning the first of the four Grand Slam Championships - Australian Open, Apia International Sydney and the US National Indoor Tennis Championships in Memphis.
