Bryan Brothers oust Fyrstenberg/Matkowski in the quarterfinal – Western & Southern Open 2011
World number one duo of Bob Bryan and Mike Bryan from the United States went through some real tough times before they finally clinched victory in the quarter-final of Western and Southern Financial Group Masters, defeating the seventh seeded Pole of Mariusz Fyrstenberg and Marcin Matkowski, on Friday afternoon.
The contest was played at the outdoor hard courts at the Lindner Family Tennis Center in Mason, near Cincinnati, United States, with the Bryan Brothers standing up to the expectations of the local crowd to come out as the winner in straight sets 7-6(5), 7-6(3). Fyrstenberg and Matkowski posed some serious resistance in the matchup and fought valiantly for one hour and twenty five minutes of play before submitting the matchup.
Bob and Mike kept their focus throughout the game and exhibited their brilliant tennis skills under extreme pressure situations of the contest. Their sweating victory earned them a place in the semi-final draw of the ATP (Association of Tennis Professionals) Masters Series event.
No serve breaks were registered by any of the duo in the entire contest, settling both sets in the tie breaker rounds. The Bryan Brothers took the better of their opponents with their magnificent points winning ability in the matchup, securing 42 out of their 49 first serve points in the game and Fyrstenberg and Matkowski clinching 30 out of 39 points to finish on the losing end.
The Pole competitors kept the scores moving neck-to-neck throughout the matchup but tend to lose their concentration at times needed the most. Bob and Mike fired seven aces in the contest and coughed three double faults en route to victory.
The opening set took off with aggression from both pairs but none of them succeeded in cracking in a serve break. Scores kept moving on even terms to reach 6-6, enforcing a tie breaker round into play. Fyrstenberg and Matkowski took the tie breaker to the wire as well but a crucial mini-break from the American duo closed out the first set at 7-6(5), giving them one-set lead in the matchup.
The second set was also a complete replication of the first set, with another tie breaker round coming into play at 6-6. Bob and Mike gave limited chances to the Pole opponents this time round and wound up victory at 7-6(3), to make it into the semi-final round of Cincinnati Masters to face the third seeded pair of Mahesh Bhupathi and Leander Paes from India.
