Bryan Brothers wreck Paes/Stepanek in the quarter-final round – Monte Carlo Rolex Masters 2012
Top seed in the doubles draw, the duo of Bob Bryan and Mike Bryan overpowered the fifth seed Indian-Czech combination of Leander Paes and Radek Stepanek in the quarter-finals of the Monte Carlo Rolex Masters. The Americans took
merely 50 minutes to formulate a 6-2, 6-0 victory over their opponents on Friday, booking a place in the semi-final of the ATP (Association of Tennis Professionals) Masters 1000 event in Monte Carlo, Monaco.
It was a completely one-sided affair, with the Bryan Brothers dominating every minutes of play to reign supreme over the fifth seeded opponents. Winner of this year’s Australian Open doubles title, Paes and Stepanek failed to put
up any sort of challenge to the top seed Americans. They appeared rusty and out of form throughout the match, spilling out a number of unforced errors and thumping the ball into the net on regular occasions.
It was the fifth time these two duos went face-to-face against each other and the head-to-head series was levelled at 2-2 prior to this match. They last met at the Rome Masters in 2006, with Bryans winning 6-1, 7-5 but it was a
far comprehensive win for the legendary Americans this time round. They now lead 3-2 in the head-to-head record and are eyeing to bag their second doubles title of the running season.
The Bryan Brothers delivered 66 per cent of their serve on target and dropped just four points on it, pocketing 21 out of 25 en route to victory. The top seeds had 10 break opportunities in the match and they converted half of
them to outclass Paes and Stepanek, who utterly failed to register a single serve break in the entire contest. The scores were 2-2 in the opening set when Bob and Mike shifted to their rage mode and went on for a 10-game rampage to conclude victory with a
bagel.
The unseeded Spanish pair of Marcel Granollers and Marc Lopez also registered a thumping straight sets victory, 6-0, 6-1, over the Germ-Austrian combination of Florian Mayer and Jurgen Melzer in the quarter-finals. They will take
on the Bryan brothers in the round of four on Saturday.
