Bryan Herta Autosports driver Dan Wheldon emerges victorious at Indy500 – IndyCar news
Bryan Herta Autosports driver Dan Wheldon won the dramatic 100th anniversary Indy500 race on Sunday.
This was the second attempt for Bryan Herta Autosports in the series event, which resulted in a victory.
Wheldon was emotional after the being victorious in the unique event and said, “I was driving as hard as I could. I just kept pushing. It's a fantastic achievement. It's an incredible feeling. I never gave up. It's unfortunate for JR, but it's fortunate
for me. I drove it like I stole it.”
The team owner Herta was also pleased with Wheldon’s victory.
Wheldon also commented about the incident with the IndyCar rookie JR Hildebrand as he said, “To come here with a rookie at his first Indy 500. [Hildebrand] drove the h**l out of the thing all day. It's just one of those things. We have to hold our heads
up high. He put us in a position to win. I couldn't be prouder of him right now.”
Panther Racing driver JR Hildebrand was all set to win in his first attempt in the race. When he had his last fuel refill, he made an astonishing 36 laps with it. The mileage gave him the benefit to stay on the track for a long time. Meanwhile, other drivers
had to stop for refuelling.
He gained the lead on the track but while covering the last corner of the final lap, he slid and went wide crashing into the sidewall. He was overtaking Charlie Kimball when he hit the wall. Despite the severe crash, he managed to cross the finish line in
second place aboard a wrecked car.
Ganassi team driver Graham Rahal took third place in the race, followed by KV Racing team driver Tony Kanaan and Newman-Haas Racing driver Oriol Servia.
If pace was considered, the Ganassi cars were ahead of the rest driven by Scott Dixon and Dario Franchitti. Later in the race, both teammates were unlucky to stay ahead and dropped to finish at 6th and 12th positions.
