Bryan Little makes third period decider as Winnipeg Jets edge Boston Bruins 2-1 -NHL Update
Ever since the month of December kicked off in the 2011-2012 National Hockey League (NHL) regular season, Winnipeg has been on a roll and earned their third straight victory against Boston as the Jets edged the Bruins, 2-1, on Tuesday, December 6, 2011,
at the sold-out MTS Centre in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada.
Winnipeg bumped up to the 10th number spot in the Eastern Conference with 28 points, standing below the eighth number Washington Capitals who have 29 points.
The Jets also snapped Boston’s four-game winning streak which could have landed them in the top spot in the East, but still stand behind the Pittsburgh Penguins by one point with 35.
Home goalie, Ondrej Pavelec, was outshot throughout the contest by facing 40 shot attempts on his net as compared to Boston’s, Tuukka Rask, who had to play five less, but the Jets goalkeeper stood focused and only slipped on one to keep Winnipeg strong in
the game.
"I thought we played a really solid 60-minute game," Jets coach, Claude Noel, said. "[Goaltender Ondrej] Pavelec was outstanding when he had to be outstanding. We're playing smart, we're following the details and we're getting the job done."
Winnipeg captain, Andrew Ladd, kicked off the scoring with less than two minutes remaining in the opening period for his ninth goal of the season after the home team managed to kill of an early added man advantage for Boston when Jim Slater was booked for
slashing with a minor penalty.
Shawn Thornton countered back for the Bruins after a scoreless second period contest to level the match 3:16 into the third and final 20 minutes of regulation, which was closely followed by Bryan Little on a breakaway unassisted after taking control of the
puck for the game-winner nearly a minute later.
Seeing Little score that very crucial goal, the 15,000 plus crowd at the MTS Centre could not have been happier and roared with joy.
"It was the loudest I've ever heard the arena," Little said. "It was unbelievable."
For coach Noel, his team seems to be finally adjusting to the season.
"We're getting a lot of good games from a lot of people," Noel said. "It was goaltending, defence and forwards, just smart, responsible play."
