Bryan Nickson injures knee ahead of CWG
Malaysia's campaign in the 2010 Commonwealth Games suffered a blow three days before the quadrennial multi-sport event opens in New Delhi.
Amateur Swimming Union of Malaysia secretary Edwin Chong has confirmed that top diver Bryan Nickson suffered a knee injury while training in China.
"I have been informed by the coach (Yang Zhuliang) that Bryan has injured his left knee. It's a common one faced by a diver as a result of putting too much stress when one depresses the springboard," he
said.
Chong also said that they are considering pulling out Nickson from his other events.
“Given his talent, Bryan has fighting chances for medals in all the five events if he is in good fitness condition and form. But it looks like it’s no longer possible for him to compete in all the events.
It's better for him to drop one or two events than risk going for all and end up with no medal," he said.
Nickson's pet event is the 10m platform. His level of skill in the discipline is slightly lower than reigning world champion Tom Daley of England, who will also see action in New Delhi. Nickson and James
Sandayud won a silver medal in the 10m platform synchronised event at the 2006 Commonwealth Games in Melbourne.
The 20-year-old Nickson is also a strong medal contender in the 3m synchronised springboard. The Sarawakian partnered with Yeoh Ken Nee to win a silver medal at the Asian Championships and a gold medal
in last year's Laos Southeast Asian Games.
Joining Nickson and Nee in the men's squad are Ahmad Amsyar and Mohd Fakhrul. The members of the women's squad are Pandelela Rinong, Leong Mun Yee, Trasie Vivien, Cheong Jun Hoong and Wendy Ng. The Malaysian
diving team will leave for New Delhi on 5 October. The Commonwealth Games diving competition will be held from 9 October to 13 October.
