Bryan Redpath has a job to do at Sale Sharks – Rugby News Update
Bryan Redpath, the 40-year-old former Scotland and Sale Sharks scrum-half makes his return to the club, where he played for 5 years between 2000 – 2005, as their new boss.
However, Redpath has laid down the gauntlet by saying that he will not be giving any favours to players due to old loyalties, and every member of the team will have to earn the right to play in the starting XV, especially to friends who are still playing
in the Aviva Premiership.
Redpath’s signature was a long drawn out process, with his former club accusing the Sharks of tapping him up, but all that is cleared, and the former player can focus on bringing lost glory back to the club. Sharks won the Aviva Premiership in 2006 and he
wants to build on the work left by Steve Diamond.
"Steve has done a great job getting everyone on track but now we have to keep pushing hard, and keep making sacrifices to be even more successful," Redpath said. "To have reached the top six is fine once but when was the last time Sale were in the top six?
When was the last time Sale were in the top four? When was the last time they got to a final?”
However, Redpath is a high achiever, and with Gloucester he was able to reach five finals, two semi-finals and a quarterfinal in the seven years he worked at the club. He understands the pressure that comes with coaching a top team, and knows what it takes
to win. He will be instilling that belief in his players, and will not be giving any favours to his mates.
He said, "I care about them but there can be no mates rates - we are here to be successful.”
Redpath burst onto the international scene for Scotland when he made his debut against New Zealand in 1993, and finished his international career in 2003, by playing his last game against Australia. He made a total of 60 appearances for his country, starting
52 games and coming on as a substitute 8 times.
He was the head coach at Gloucester Rugby before making his move to Sale.
