Bryan Redpath joins Sale Sharks – Rugby News Update
Bryan Redpath, the 40-year-old former Scotland scrum-half and former head coach of Gloucester, has joined the Sale Sharks, after rumours emerged in April this year that the club had approached him while he was working at Gloucester.
After retiring from the sport in 2005, he joined as the backs coach of Gloucester under Dean Ryan, the head coach of the time. In his first two seasons, the club finished top of the Premiership, but they had to face defeats to the Leicester Tigers in the
play-off.
The Chief Executive of Sale Sharks, Steve Diamond was excited at having Redpath as the new coach of the club, following the exit of Tony Hanks. He said, "Anybody who knows what happened at our club in the last 15 months will be aware that we termed it 'Year
Zero', and that was just the start. Looking to the future we have a number of good players joining us. What I've always wanted since returning to the club was a proven coach in the Premiership, and in Bryan Redpath that's exactly what we've got."
Redpath’s former club, Gloucester had threatened to pursue legal action against the Sharks if they found out that the team had made an illegal approach for their coach. He resigned before the season ended, and at the time he had cited results as a reason
for his departure. With Redpath signing for the Sharks, it will open up the debate once again.
However, the former scrum-half wants to plan ahead, and is looking towards the new season. He said, "There have been a few changes here. Seven years away coaching down at Gloucester has been great for me and it's great to come back up."
Sharks are going to be playing in the Heineken Cup next year having finished 6th in the Premiership. Redpath paid tribute to the work Steve has been doing at the club, and he wants to guide the club back to the top of the league.
Redpath played for Scotland 60 times, making his debut against New Zealand at Murrayfield, on November 20, 1993, and played his last match against Australia at Brisbane, on November 8, 2003.
