Bryan brothers break McEnroe’s record of longest reigning doubles world number one – Tennis News
Bryan brothers have broken yet another record on 12th December, 2011 by becoming the longest reigning world number one individuals in doubles rankings. They have been on top of the world for 271 weeks and have eventually
over ruled the record held by the legendary tennis idol from America, John McEnroe.
It has never been an easy trip to glory for the twin brothers and they have always been at their heels to rip off any player that has even sneaked closer to their number one ranking. The duo showed great respect to McEnroe and
never thought of breaking his majestic record anytime at the start of their professional career.
They were very proud of their performances and it is true that records are not made to be kept forever; someone somewhere is born to break them. There will be a team in the making that will break the record registered by these
twins but at the moment they are cruising in the field of doubles tennis and registering record after record.
Last month they were presented with yet another year-end number one trophy and it was their seventh of the career. Unfortunately they lost in the semi-finals of year-end title, contested in O2 Arena in London, and were deprived
of the most elite title but still their entire year’s performance remains a best tutorial for any upcoming doubles superstar.
One of their toughest battles of the year was against the second ranked duo of Michael Llodra and Nenad Zimonjic in the semi-final of Wimbledon. They were down and out and were losing the fifth set with a massive trail of 4-1 but
they managed to jump back into the game, knocked out their arch rivals and dodged a major upset of the year.
Twin brothers’ career is one to be written in the history with golden words. Just like Pete Sampras and Roger Federer made names in the singles category, these two are not behind the two legends at all. They have won 75 titles
in their entire career whilst Federer has won 70; they owns the record of the longest reigning number one doubles players of 271 weeks and Federer owns this record in the singles category it for 285 weeks. They are no less than any of the great tennis legends
ever seen in the world of tennis and especially in the field of doubles.
No one seems to dethrone the twin brothers and another new season is on the cards with new resolutions by each doubles team. World will have to wait another 52 weeks to know that if Bryan brothers are stripped of their number one
sport or not.
