Bryan Brothers ensure year-end number one ranking – Tennis News
American twins, Bob Bryan and Mike Bryan, will now surely finish the season with number one doubles ranking. They have captured this honour for the fourth consecutive time and record eighth overall in their career.
Previously, Bob and Mike ended the season as the best team on the ATP World Tour in 2003, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2009, 2010, 2011. They have been ranked number one for a total of 298 weeks, which is an all time record.
Commenting on their achievement, Bob said, “Finishing No. 1 is always our ultimate goal when we start any season and to achieve this again feels amazing. The quality of doubles continues to get tougher each year and it is an honour
to finish ahead of so many strong teams. Winning the gold medal along with the US Open made this past summer one of the most memorable times in our career.”
Bryans were replaced by Max Mirnyi and Daniel Nestor as the top ranked doubles team after this year’s French Open in June. However, the American combination got back their number one position in September.
Bob and Mike started the season in the best possible manner, as they won the Apia International Sydney but they lost to Leander Paes and Radek Stepanek in the final of the Australian Open. Few months later, they captured titles
at the Monte-Carlo Rolex Masters and Open de Nice Côte d’Azur.
They suffered two back to back losses at the hands of Mirnyi and Nestor in the finals of French Open and AEGON Championships. Then they were stunned by unseeded team of Jonathan Marray and Fredrik Nielsen in the semi-finals of
the Wimbledon.
However, the most successful doubles team in the history of the sport bounced back in style, as it captured Gold Medal at the London Olympics and then Rogers Cup, US Open and China Open titles.
Mike commented on the pair’s record in this season, "We will look back on 2012 with a lot of fond memories. Winning the Olympics and breaking the Woodies’ record at the US Open were obviously the highlights.”
Bob and Mike will be biding to win the season ending championships for the fourth time.
