Bryan brothers sail past Mirnyi/Nestor; lift seventh year-to-date title – Erste Bank Open 2011
In an epic final between top two teams, top seeded American brothers, Bob and Mike, fended off early resistance to earn a straight set victory over the second seeds, Belarusian Max Mirnyi and Canadian Daniel Nestor, at the title
round of the Erste Bank Open 2011. They registered a 7-6(10), 6-3 success over the Belarusian Canadian duo to lift their seventy-fifth career title on Sunday.
The Bryan twins re-created their magic to win seventh year-to-date title and their first since Wimbledon after blasting away the Mirnyi Nestor tandem in an hour and fifteen minutes on their first meeting.
Ranked one in the ATP World Tour Doubles rankings, Bob and Mike breezed to pluck in entire serves without facing any breakpoint. They manipulated a breakpoint opportunity but squandered it. As a result, the set went to a tie-breaker
where the brothers outclassed the lower seeds and clinched the set with a 7-6(10) score line.
The blissful twins carried their momentum into the final set and after dusting away both breakpoints came across, they kept entire serves. In addition to this, Bryans capitalised on one out of three breakpoint chances to their
advantage to seal the set with a 6-3 win.
Overall, the high flying brothers clobbered a higher first serve share of 81 percent as compared to their rivals’ 61 percent and registered a spectacular 80 percent win on it.
"It feels good to get back in the winners’ circle," said Mike Bryan. "We haven’t won a title since Wimbledon. Hopefully it bodes well for the rest of the indoor season and hopefully we continue playing well and build toward London."
"These guys are two of the greatest doubles players of all time," Mike praised their opponents. "They’re two of the nicest guys on the tour. We had a lot of fun."
Bryans will next play at Valencia Open 500 and at BNP Paribas Masters before ending the season at Barclays ATP World Tour Finals which they’ve already qualified.
"Congratulations to the brothers - the best team in the world. They showed it today," said Nestor. "They played a great match. We had a couple chances early, but we didn’t take them and they’re going to make you capitalise for
that."
Both Mirnyi and Nestor have won in Vienna before with other partners. Nestor triumphed here last year with Nenad Zimonjic and also lifted the crown in 2005 with Mark Knowles. The third ranked team in the world, Mirnyi and Nestor
were eying for their fourth title together and their second straight after winning at Shanghai Rolex Masters two weeks ago.
