Bryan brothers topple Bhupathi/Bopanna to capture the title – Rome Masters 2013
Top seeded Americans, Bob and Mike Bryan, outclassed the Indian Express, Mahesh Bhupathi and Rohan Bopanna, in straight sets at the Internazionali BNL D’Italia 2013 on Sunday.
They penned down a 6-2, 6-3 victory against the Indians to grab their 88th team title at this ATP Masters 1000 event held in Rome, Italy.
The number one doubles team of Bob and Mike displayed brilliant tennis to oust the Indians in 52 minutes.
“We knew we needed to play very well to win this match and I thought we put in a very strong performance,” reflected Bob Bryan after stealing the glory. “We're obviously very pleased with the way the last couple weeks have gone and are hoping to carry this
momentum into Paris.”
Bob reflected about their rivals in the interview, “It's great to see Hesh and Bops playing together again especially after their strong finish last season. They're great for doubles and we know we'll be playing the Indian Express again in big matches this
year.”
The American twins made a strong start at this match. They capitalised on an early break point and jumped to a 4-1 lead. The Bryans held their remaining serves with poise and cashed another break chance in the last game, eventually sealing the opener by
winning six games to two in 24 minutes.
Bob and Mike carried their rhythm in the proceeding set. They swiftly bagged their entire serves and got the breakthrough in the eighth game, subsequently clicking the set with a 6-3 win.
The Bryans clobbered a lower first serve share of 68 per cent as opposed to their rivals’ 75 per cent but impressively marked 27 out of 31 points on it. They were never threatened with any breakpoint and converted three out of five break chances to their
advantage.
With this victory, Bryans shelved their 24th Masters crown. They bagged €155,400 in prize money and earned 1000 Emirates Airways ATP Ranking Points. In addition to this, this was the Americans’ sixth title of the season and they improved to 34-6 win-loss
record.
Bhupathi dropped to 52-45 in the ATP finals whereas Bopanna fell to 8-17 in the finals after this loss.
