Bryan twins, Murray Brothers make it to the quarterfinals – Rogers Cup 2011
World number one duo of Bob Bryan and Mike Bryan of the United States cruised their way to the quarter-final round of the Rogers Cup after defeating the Spanish combination of Feliciano Lopez and Fernando Verdasco in the second
round clash on Thursday afternoon.
Being a part of the ATP (Association of Tennis Professionals) Master Series, the competition was staged on the hard courts of the Uniprix Stadium in Montreal, Canada, with the Bryan Brothers claiming victory in straight sets 6-3,
7-6(3). The Spaniards utterly failed to take down the world number one pair and survived just 68 minutes before surrendering in the second set, letting Bob and Mike into the quarter-finals.
The Bryan Brothers remained unbroken in the entire matchup and nailed two out of their eight break opportunities to wrap up victory in straight sets. The contest was off to a steady start in the opening set, taking the scores to
3-3 with both pairs taking their time to get settled in the matchup. The top seeded duo made their first move in the seventh game and nailed two consecutive serve breaks to bag the opener at 6-3.
No serve breaks from both sides took the following set into the tie breaker round, with the Spaniards failing to put up some serious fight in the decider. Lopez and Verdasco submitted the matchup to the Bryan Brothers at 6-7(3),
letting them into the quarter-finals to face the fifth seeded combination of Rohan Bopanna of India and Aisam-ul-Haq Qureshi from Pakistan.
The unseeded duo of Andy Murray and Jamie Murray from the Great Britain also won their second round clash against the eighth seeded team of Eric Butorac and Jean-Julien Rojer, to make it into the quarter-final rounds.
The Murray Brothers took one hour and nine minutes to wind up victory in three sets, 6-2, 2-6, 10-8, after a stiff contest. The Britons bagged the opening set early in the matchup to get a ballistic start but let Butorac and Rojer
immediately come back in the following set. The second set fell to the name of the eighth seeded duo at 6-2, with two cracking serve breaks to stun Andy and Jamie.
The final set also went to the wire, with both pairs competing to their limits to come out as the winner. Andy and Jamie finally took advantage of a mini-break in the last moments to wrap up the match at 10-8, booking a date with
the duo of Tomas Berdych and Florian Mayer in the quarter-finals.
