Bryans cruise past Mariusz Fyrstenberg/Marcin Matkowski into the semi-finals of Mutua Madrid Open
Twins Bob and Mike Bryan of USA defeated Polish team of Mariusz Fyrstenberg and Marcin Matkowski in straight sets 6-3, 6-4 in the quarterfinals of the Mutua Madrid Open at the La Caja Mágica in Madrid on Friday. The Americans took
just 58 minutes to dispatch their opponents in a one-sided clash.
Bryans needed a single break of serve in the opening set to claim it 6-3. The twins hit a single ace and a couple of double faults in the first set. The Americans delivered 81 percent of the first serves, winning 82 percent of
the points on them in the opening set. On the other hand, Fyrstenberg and Matkowski had a low first serve percentage as they hit just 48 percent of the first serves but their conversion rate was amazingly high as they converted 90 percent of the first serves
into points. The Polish duo could not save one of the two break points they faced in the first set. Fyrstenberg and Matkowski failed to capitalize on any of the four break point opportunities they created in the opening set.
Both pairs held their serve in the first eight games of the second set to tie the score at 4-4. Bryans broke the Polish pair in the ninth game and held their serve in the next game, capturing the set 6-4.
The top seeded pair kept their first serve percentage at 65 percent and grabbed a whopping 93 percent of the points on them in the second set. On the other hand, Fyrstenberg and Matkowski fired five aces but also committed two
double faults in the second set. The Polish pair managed to deliver just 46 percent of the first serves, converting 85 percent of them into points in the second set. Fyrstenberg and Matkowski returned badly, clinching a mere 7 percent of the points on the
first service returns. Bryans converted one of the two break points they received in the second set.
In the second round, the twins defeated Michal Mertinak and Viktor Troicki in straight sets 6-4, 7-6(3).
The world’s best double team is chasing their fourth Mutua Madrid Open title. They defeated Bahamian/Canadian pair of Mark Knowles and Daniel Nestor in straight sets 7-5, 6-4 in the final to win their maiden Madrid crown in 2006.
The American pair prevailed over Canadian/Serbian team of Daniel Nestor and Nenad Zimonjic in straight sets 6-3, 6-4 in the title match last year.
Bryans are drawn to meet their compatriots John Isner and Sam Querrey in the semi-finals. Isner and Querrey defeated the Indo-Pak Express Rohan Bopanna and Aisam-Ul-Haq Qureshi in three sets 6-7(6), 6-4, 10-3 in the quarterfinals.
