Bryans down Gonzalez/Kas to advance to the quarter-finals – Internazionali BNL d’Italia 2012
American twins, Bob Bryan and Mike Bryan, convincingly defeated Mexican-German pair of Santiago Gonzalez and Christopher Kas in straight sets 6-3, 6-2 in the second round at the Internazionali BNL d’Italia in Rome, Italy on Wednesday.
They required just 53 minutes, thrashing their opponents in an easy match.
In the first set, none of the two teams succeeded in breaking other in the first seven games to take the score to 4-3 in favour of the Bryans. The American duo finally managed to secure lead in the eighth and served out the set
at 5-3.
Bryans neither hit any ace nor made any double fault, putting in 77 percent of the first serves and converting 16 of the 20 of them into points. The twins were almost flawless on the second deliveries and returns, as they claimed
four of the six and six of the eight points on them respectively. The left and right hand combination did not give their opponents any chance to break and availed one of the four of their own in the opener.
The Americans snatched a break in the very first game of the second set and held their subsequent game to gain a 2-0 advantage. Bob and Mike hit another blow in the fifth but that was returned in the following one to take the score
to 4-2. The 34-year-olds captured two consecutive games after that to close it 6-2.
The twin brothers smacked one ace and did not commit any double fault in the second set. They had a poor first serve percentage of 47 but won eight of the nine points on them. Bryans hit attacking second deliveries, converting
seven of the 10 of them into points. They repeated their excellent performance on the replies to Gonzalez and Kas’ serves, clinching nine of the 18 points on the first and four of the seven on the second returns.
Bryans were upset by Pakistani-Dutch team of Aisam-Ul-Haq Qureshi and Jean-Julien Rojer in the second round at the Mutua Madrid Open last week.
Talking to the media, Bob said, "We were pretty eager to get out there as it was a tough loss last week [to Qureshi and Rojer]. We worked hard the past five days and played extremely well. We capitalised on our break points and
served well. It was a good match."
Bryans are slated to meet Lukasz Kubot and Janko Tipsarevic in the quarter-finals.
