Bryans down Paes/Stepanek to capture men’s doubles title – US Open 2012
World number two team, Bob Bryan and Mike Bryan of USA, captured their fourth US Open title by scoring a one sided win over the fifth seeds, Leander Paes and Radek Stepanek, in the final at the Flushing Meadows on Friday.
The American twins dropped just seven games in the entire match, winning the contest in straight sets 6-3, 6-4 in just an hour and 31 minutes.
Bryans have made or levelled a number of records with this win. The American brothers have equalled the Open Era record of most US Open title at four. They have made the Open Era overall Grand Slam mark by winning their 12th
crown, also levelling the all-time record of most Majors.
The final was started in a steady manner, as both teams held their serve in the first five games to take the score to 3-2 in Bryans favour. The American duo nailed a breakthrough in the sixth and capitalised on it to get a 5-2
advantage. Bob and Mike did not allow the Indian-Czech combination to fight back, as they did not lose even a single point in the ninth to close it 6-3.
Bryans carried the winning momentum into the second set, striking in the opening game and winning their subsequent serve to open up a 2-0 lead. The right and left hand combination maintained their advantage till the end, capturing
it 6-4.
Bryans served cautiously throughout the contest, banging in just three aces and committing only one double fault. The American tandem put in 79 of the first serves and converted 34 of the 42 of them into points. The 34-year-olds
were near flawless on the ground strokes, bombarding 22 winners and making just six unforced errors.
The twins were really happy on their performances and making the records, as Mike said, “When you're in the heat of the moment you don't want to think about that stuff. We're just trying to win the Grand Slam. And now that we could
chill a little bit, it's fun to have it. We looked up to the Woodies, and to break some of their records is unbelievable, because we idolise those guys. They're one of the reasons we play doubles. Just to be mentioned with those guys is pretty special. But
to have a huge record like the Grand Slam record is really cool.”
Paes and Stepanek were bidding to win their eighth and second Grand Slam title respectively.
