Bryans overtake Mirnyi and Nestor to regain top ranking – Tennis News
Bob Bryan and Mike Bryan have recaptured their lost top ranking for the current season. They traded places with the previous number ones, Max Mirnyi and Daniel Nestor, to go on top of the list.
The twins grabbed 1000 rankings points by winning the Rogers Cup in Toronto, which is an ATP World Tour Masters event. They are now leading the field with 6,675 points and are 360 points ahead of their closest rivals, who are now
standing at the second position with 6315 points.
There are a total of six changes in the top 10 doubles rankings this week. There is long gap between these two top two teams and the rest of the field. Swedish-Romanian duo of Robert Lindstedt and Horia Tecau has retained their
third position, having 4,695 points. This year’s Australian Open champions, Leander Paes of India and Czech Republic’s Radek Stepanek, are also unmoved at their fourth spot with 3,765 points.
Spanish combination of Marcel Granollers and Marc Lopez has jumped to the fifth rank by crossing Mariusz Fyrstenberg and Marcin Matkowski of Poland. Granollers and Lopez have earned 3,370 points in this season compared to the Polish
pair, which is now at sixth position with has 3,060.
Pakistani-Dutch tandem of Aisam-Ul-Haq Qureshi and Jean-Julien Rojer, which lost in the quarter-finals of the Rogers Cup, have replaced Mahesh Bhupathi and Rohan Bopanna for the seventh rank. Qureshi and Rojer have 2,345 ranking
points and the Indian team is now at eighth spot with 2,165.
Jonathan Marray and Frederik Nielsen, who stunned everyone by winning the Wimbledon Championships, have retained their ninth position with 2000 points. Spaniards, David Marrero and Fernando Verdasco, are also on the same 10th
position, having 1905 points.
The number one team, Bryans, saved a match point to defeat Granollers and Lopez in the final to win the Rogers Cup title on Sunday. The most successful doubles combination in the tennis history won its second Masters Series crown
of the season and their 21st overall. They had previously won the Monte-Carlo Rolex Masters in April. The twins have also won two ATP World Tour 250 events in Sydney and Nice in this season.
The American combination has also qualified for this year’s ATP World Tour Finals. On booking their place in the season ending championships, Bob said, “That's a big goal for all the teams when they start the year to make it to
the O2. It’s an incredible venue. It’s a great stage for the doubles, probably the biggest stage of the year, and to qualify means a lot to us.”
Mirnyi and Nestor had qualified for the ATP World Tour Finals at the start of last week.
