i went to the game, and to be honest gibbs may have racked up the numbers but it doesn't tell the real story that they were all easy kicks/loose none hard and he's pace is lacking.

i hope im wrong as its only his second year but i cant see him being the champion that the media thought pre drafting.

your thoughts??

  1. Yea, i agree. He was sloppy with the ball. Carlton really let me down with that game. Marc Murphy was pretty good though. i love that guy, hes hot!

  2. none of Carlton recruits in the passed 6 yrs are as good as Carlton thought

  3. Some interesting answers there. especially the one about only being his 2nd year. Take a look at what Joel Selwood did last year as a 1st year player. more times than not he was at the bottom of the pack. As for Gibbs it may take a few more years for him to get enough confidence to deal with the bigger bodied players

  4. You're a Carlton man Forky so you would of seen more of him than i, but not all middy's are going to get in and under. think back, Craig Bradley, marcou, etc, they had Williams who got in and fed it out, they cant be all players of one type, were his 26 to his team mates, if so then i wouldn't worry too much.

if he has 20 go directly to a team mate, that's still great really, we have Foley at the tigers who goes in, coggs to come back, then who do they feed it out to, Johnson who kicks to a pack and the opposition  all day?

he'll come good mate, not that 26 disposals is bad, every side needs a few receivers, they are normally good finishers.

it $hits you when your team is down and after today we might be back down there with you again, hope not..

  5. I reckon he's doing pretty much as expected, how old is he, 19? and facing the man-mountain St Kilda team who are probably in the best form of any AFL team right now.

Carlton's best hope to escape its defeatist culture is contained in Betts, Murphy, Gibbs and a couple of other Little Boys Blue.

and as you may remember, I am a Bomber who dislikes the current Carlton atmosphere, so I have no reason to compliment the club.

  6. Some very interesting answers indeed...

golc coast - Joel Selwood may be a 2nd year like gibbs, but he has a better team around him and especially a better midfield.

(my comment/answer) I would agree that in his 2nd year Gibbs is still adjusting to the top level of footy and will come good as the team improves.

ne0n_dj seems to have got it spot on (well the first part at least). There are two types of midfielders, the in-and-unders (inside midfielders) who dig the ball out and the receivers (outside midfielders) who get the ball from the first type and use it (hopefully) to their team's advantage.

Gibbs seems to be an outside midfielder. The other thing is he seems to be playing a half back-winger role and doesn't follow the ball as much as Judd, Murphy, Scotland, Carrazo and Stevens. Gibbs will move into the midfield group in a few seasons.

what ne0n_dj got wrong is that Judd is an inside midfielder, he goes and gets the ball for example (in last nites match StK vs Carl Rd2 2008 which I went to) the ball was hurredly kicked to the wing where Dal Santo and Judd (and another Carlton Bloke) chased the ball, Dally was in the lead but he tapped the ball on cos he didnt wanna be tackled and Judd swooped in and got the ball. Judd outplayed Dal there. Also judd doesn't get many marks, meaning he either links up for handballs or goes and gets the ball himself.

Fevola is a forward, he HAS to wait for someone to pass it to him to fulfil his role in the team! <.<

Overall, I think you need to give Gibbs a few seasons, if he's still not a star (like Daniel Wells) than it is a fair call that he may not have been worthy of Draft Pick #1, 2006. But if he is, enjoy the performances he will give for your club! :)

  7. the thing is you have two types of midfielders, those who get in and under the packs and get the 'hardball' like Sam Mitchell, Luke Ball and Daniel Kerr

then you have those who wait outside the packs waiting for the handball like Nick Dal Santo, Shannon Grant and basically the entire Carlton midfield which is where the problem lies..

I've followed the Carlton rebuilding with interest and I'm yet to see a player who can be seen at the bottom of packs... far too often the likes of Murphy, Gibbs, Stevens, Judd and even Fevola are just there waiting for someone to pass them the ball and until then seem to just disappear from the game...

  8. your right i think hes finding that playing with the big boys isnt s easy as he expected

  9. Yeah Gibbsy will become a great player

It's only his second year as u said

I think give him this year to experience more

and next year he'll become a star

  10. he will only get better and will turn out to be a great player for the blues
