Bryce Harper and Kurt Suzuki help Washington Nationals pound Philadelphia Phillies 8-4-MLB Update
Catcher Kurt Suzuki and centre fielder Bryce Harper power the Washington Nationals to an 8-4 victory against the Philadelphia Phillies at Citizens Bank Park, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on September 26, 2012 in the second match of the three game series.
Initial run-rampage kept the Nationals afloat throughout the game. The impact of number of runs scored in the first two innings was too strong that Phillies’ resistance later on was easily stymied by it.
At the end of the second inning, Nationals were leading by five runs. Phillies desperately needed some of their batters to fire and post sufficient number of runs at this stage of the game.
In their journey toward recovery, they were successful to some extent as they managed to reduce deficit to one run by the completion of the eighth inning. However, they could not make anything substantial out of it as they failed to keep the momentum going
in the last inning.
Washington banked on home-runs from their batters to post a formidable total on the scoreboard. Harper connected two hits in five at-bats while adding three RBIs. He slammed a mammoth two-run homer in the first inning.
Kurt Suzuki was another hitter who stepped up at the plate and thrashed for a home-run.
As far as the pitchers were concerned, John Lannan started for the Nationals. In little more than five innings, he gave up two runs and leaked five hits.
Nationals’ manager Davey Johnson has grown accustomed to watching the 19-year old Harper pulling off gigantic home-runs.
"That's nothing new to me," Davey Johnson said. "I saw him hit a 500-foot homer when he was 14 years old. The thing is he thinks he should be hitting .400."
Phillies’ manager Charlie Manuel speaks after the match about the hard work they have been putting in the last couple of months. The loss on Wednesday has further dented their hopes for taking their winning percentage to a respectable level.
"We've been pushing real hard and it's catching up to us," Charlie Manuel said.
One more game is left in the series. The Nationals will love to carry the momentum forward and witness their batters hitting home-runs.
