Brydan Klein overcomes Jimmy Wang to reach the quarters – Caloundra International 2012 CH
Local challenger, Brydan Klein, bounced over the Taiwanese contender, Jimmy Wang, in a three set nail biter at the Caloundra International 2012 on Thursday. He clobbered a 5-7, 6-4, 6-3 score line against the 27-year-old Taiwanese to advance into the quarter-finals
at this hard court tournament taking place in Queensland, Australia.
World number 450, Klein, stayed solid throughout the match to outclass the Saudi Arabia-born Wang in almost two and half hours. He required three set to oust Wang in their first meeting at this ATP (Association of Tennis Professionals) Challenger Tour event
held at the Caloundra Tennis Club.
Wang, ranked 229th in the South African Airways ATP World Tour rankings, nervously entered the opening set and lost her serve in the fifth game. However, he recovered in the eighth game and later maintained consistency in her game to keep remaining
serves. The Taiwanese then capitalised on another break opportunity in the last game and clinched the opener with a 7-5 score line.
The Aussie redeployed his strategy in the following set and held his opening serve in the second game to square the scores at 1-1. Klein then maintained consistency in his game and plucked in entire serves after warding off all three breakpoints he encountered.
He earned the breakthrough in the seventh game and subsequently sealed the equaliser by winning six games to four.
The match could go anywhere at this point but the person who remained on track was Klein. The local contestant got the coveted break in the opening game and quickly went 2-0 up. Despite levelling the scores at 2-2, he went on a three games rampage before
losing his serve again. However, the Aussie converted another break opportunity in the last game and bagged the decider with a 6-3 win.
Next challenge for Klein is the third seed, James Duckworth, who trashed the Indian star, Vishnu Vardhan, in straight sets to set-up this duel. The seed brushed off one out of two breakpoints he faced and capitalised on three out of seven break chances,
ultimately sealing the deal with a 6-4, 6-4 success in 88-minutes.
