Bubba Watson, Matt Jones in the lead at Zurich Classic of New Orleans – Golf news
Bubba Watson and Matt Jones led the field in the first round of the PGA Tour’s Zurich Classic of New Orleans after posting a score of 6-under par, 66 at the Tournament Players Club Louisiana in Avondale.
The left-handed pro Watson reeled six birdies and one eagle against two bogeys to compile a score of 6-under par, 66. He relished a success rate of 83 percent in Green Hits in Regulation, which was quite impressive against the rest of the field. In addition
to that, he finished first in driving distance with an average of 342 yards.
The American, who is not much fond of the course, said that he was playing at the course because his mother wanted to accompany him to the tournament.
He said, “Well, I have the deciding vote, but mom likes this tournament and she likes coming here. After talking to my family and stuff, I just felt like I should come here.”
When inquired about his game plan against the course, he replied, “Today it did. I have finished fifth here before. Made the cut a few times here. Just did not get anything going. Today it just worked out. I hit my driver really well.”
Meanwhile, the Aussie Matt Jones teed off from the back-nine and relished success in matching the lowest score of the day. He birdied the par-4 13th for the starters and garnished it with three back-to-back birdies towards the end.
Carrying the confidence from the first half, Jones marched towards the front-nine and hammered a beautiful 20-feet long birdie putt on the par-4 first. The crowd clapped at the brilliant stroke and while they were doing so, Jones managed another birdie at
the par-3 third.
Jones wrapped the back with 3-under par, 33 courtesy of four birdies and one bogey. He reeled eight birdied in total and finished first in the stats. In addition to that, he finished fourth in putts per green stats, which proved that the player has eminent
prowess in short game.
